| This rekkie is written by a brickie so dont expext it to be great!Well im sitting here after my great trip to oz looking out of the window on a dark, cold and dismal day with rain which is turning to sleet.Which is a far cry from the clear blue skyies and sea of perth. The 18th october was the start of our long awaited trip to oz.We flew form heathrow to Kuala Lumpur with malaysian airways.Good airline but not so good food on the way out from heathrow.K L airport is a great airport very clean, modern and spacious. We stayed in k l for three nights went to sepang to watch motogp.K L is a great city very modern with plenty of shopping malls if you like shopping. It was hot and sticky and very wet in oct.People were really friendly and it was well worth the stop off.
Now our main purpose of the trip started by flying out of k l to adelaide (better food this time on plane)We landed in adelaide at 630 in the morning and it was a little cool. The airport staff were great especially when they noticed that in our luggage we had a used beachtent (whoops) i thought they might as well bin it but they examined it washed the pegs and then gave it us back.Picked up the hire car from hertz and got hammered on the collision waiver insurance thats what you get for not reading the small print. We stayed in adelaide for 5 nights at adelaide shores campsite in a bungalow which was hugh, clean and comfy and right next to the beach. We drove to glendeg town and beachfront and stopped at a cafe and had a bite to eat.We couldnt believe how friendly the local ozzies were. But watch out for traffic wardens as they were on the ball with there tickets.Lack of sleep caught up with us so it was bed.Next day we drove to adelaide city did the bus tour, walked around the main city area.I must say its a lovely city.We walked down to the river where the kids went on a pedalo it was a good place to chillout.Again people were friendly which you dont always find back in the uk.We drove to port adelaide not much going off there but the beaches are great on that coast. We also drove to mount lofty a must do as the view of adelaide and the surrounding areas was brilliant.Just down the road was cleland wildlife park another must see.It is a great way to get close to the
wildlife and to be able to feed them.Next day we drove north stopped at elizabeth shopping centre for a bite to eat then drove up to gawler quite an old town didnt seem to be much going off but the houses were very nice and more spaced out compaired to around adelaide city.We didnt see as much as we wanted around adelaide because i couldnt get on with the grid road network not many signs kept getting lost!Seemed to be alot of traffic on the main roads but flowed very well.In all adelaide is a clean and beautiful city surrounded by lovely countryside.
We flew out of a 90 degree adleaide into a 58 degree perth! Were told that they were having a bad day.It felt like i had just stepped off the plane back in the uk!We rented a 3 bedroomed house in tapping with a pool.We took a 10 minute drive to joondalup and we walked round the shopping centre.Went to woolworths and did our grocery shopping!Found the variety for foods as good as uk.Just cant get over how many fast food outlets and fish and chip shops there are around. All the small suburbs were clean modern and well laid out.The beaches from quinns rock to scarborough that we seen were paradise with clear blue sea and white sand. Our boys prefered scarborough because it was good for bodyboarding on the big waves. We also took a drive to the pinnacles not a great drive with kids. When we got there the missus and myself were impressed but the kids said that we had drove all that way to look at a load of rocks and to fight the flies off!!So we drove to cervantes town which had a gorgous beach no one on it but us.We saw dead kangaroos on the road in places so it is worth taking out the extra insurance on your carhire.Because if you hit one your car will know about it.We took a trip into perth city we found it to be a wonderfull city and kings park is a must.At kings park you can park up for free and have a walk around and at the cafe share your muffin with a wild parrot and also take in the great views of perth city over the lake. While we were in perth we were lucky enough to be able to watch the red bull air race.We travelled to the city by train that day and we couldnt believe how cheap the family ticket was and how efficent the trains were. The next day we took a drive to rockingham, warnbro and mandarrah and had a look around. All very nice but seemed older. We couldnt really see to much due to having 2 stroppy kids in tow.All they ever wanted to do was go to the beach which cant be helped when the beaches are so lovely.Went to perth zoo 1 day just like any zoo anywhere else in the world but the wildlife parks are much better for being able to interact with the animals.Caversham wildlife park is another good day out and you dont have to pay for food to feed the kangaroos as its in a bin for you to get as much as you like. After dragging the kids around for nearly 2 weeks we let them have a few days of just relaxing on the beach. All in all perth is a big place and we bearly touched the surface. We wanted to do more but run out of time.At the end of the day you are trying to have a holiday and also work out where you would like to settle.Lucky for us we were happy where we were based and we liked it up north.Everthing was easily accesible and seemed to be more development going off which is better for me for work. |

| Hi marco&kaza, loved the rekkie report. We are visiting perth in March for a look around, we hope to hire a campervan and drive around the different suburbs. I am a chippy and have been reading about the lack of work, did you have any offers of work, and were you suitably impressed to want to definately move. Austin |

| Hi Austin,
I did not get a job offer, but i spoke to brickie he had been there 19 years allways has work but not as good 2 years ago .There is alot development in north from housing to shopping centres ,it was hard to tell how fast it happening because all the building still looked like yesterdays projects. There is lot of land been cleared for housing but i'm not if us expats are fueling it.I brought a local paper when i was there & most trades were wanted and far more job opportunities than in uk. You can go on new housebuilders websites look under employment & you should find most trades wanted. The builing trade is somewhat different more simplified. Other states have different menthods such as timber in framed housing so there is more likely more jobs for chippies on the east coast. I spoke to a plasterer from rockingham he said you will find work easy .I would move to perth tomorrow.Perth is agreat city with a fantastic inferstucture. But i feel by the time i get there they will have all the brickies the need with the flood of brits. So i'v also been looking at brissy more jobs advertised & cheaper housing with more land but not sure about the sticky heat & rain storms in summer .You will enjoy your trip all the best let us know how you get on. mark |
